But if you’re well past your prime and don’t have any medals on your mantel, don’t start thinking fitness is beyond your reach.
Meet Dr. Minkoff
As a doctor, David Minkoff has long known that getting regular exercise is a pivotal part of anyone’s health goals. But like everybody else, he realized that it became more difficult to perform at the highest levels as he aged.
Looking back on his life, Minkoff has gained a new perspective on things and, after completing multiple Ironman triathlons since turning 70, he’s sharing some of his wisdom with the rest of us.
- Admit your age: There are countless cliches suggesting you don’t have to change just because you get older … but the reality is that you’re not capable of the same things in your 70s as you were decades earlier. But simply acknowledging that, Minkoff says, can give you power to pursue great things no matter your age.
- Winning isn’t everything: Minkoff has participated in races throughout his life, but now he’s not focused on coming in first or achieving a personal best time. Instead, he wants to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from taking part in the physical activities he actually enjoys.
- Don’t forget to rest: It’s important for athletes of all skill levels and ages to take regular breaks, but that only becomes more imperative later in life. However many candles are on your cake this year, Minkoff wants you to remember that finding the right balance is what it’s all about.
Staying active pays off throughout our lives … as long as you do what you enjoy and don’t overdo it.
