A Tiny Wyoming Town Is Positioning Itself As The Future Of Nuclear Power

Bill Gates and the federal government are getting involved. A Tiny Wyoming Town Is Positioning Itself As The Future Of Nuclear Power Giphy

In the search for clean energy, solar and wind power are often at the top of the list — and for good reason. But nuclear plants are often given short shrift, which might make sense to anyone who remembers some of the tragedies and near misses of generations past.

Nevertheless, advancements in technology and safety have once again put nuclear power on the front burner, and there’s one town in Wyoming that is fully on board.

Approved by Bill Gates

There’s a lot of work going on in Kemmerer, a community of just 2,431 people as of 2022. And insiders say the end result will not only transform the town (creating about 1,600 jobs in the process) but also reinvent an entire industry.

And none other than Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is taking a central role in the ambitious project. He recently penned an article about what the forthcoming Natrium plant will mean for society and our pursuit of cleaner energy sources.

A host of public and private entities — like the U.S. Energy Department and a firm called TerraPower — are working in partnership to plan and construct what Gates described as the most advanced nuclear plant on the planet.

The long road ahead

While the development of safer and more efficient nuclear reactors is one that almost anyone can get behind, it’s not something that will come easily for the many specialists working behind the scenes. And even though local and federal government officials are assisting, there’s a lot of regulatory red tape that needs to be cleared before any real progress can begin.

Nevertheless, those promoting the Natrium plant are confident that they’re on the right track and are shooting for a launch date sometime in 2030, if not earlier.
