As many workers find that their wages aren’t increasing at the same pace as the inflation rate, the thought of picking up a side job is becoming more and more attractive. If you’re one of the nearly 6 in 10 American workers who plan to pursue some supplementary income in 2023, you’ll want to think about whether your current employer should know about it.

Since holding down a second job can be demanding, most industry insiders say it’s a good idea to be honest with your primary employer — but there are some pretty important rules to keep in mind.

How to break the news to your boss

Whether or not the terms of your employment have specific limitations regarding moonlighting or conflicts of interest, it’s probably in your best interest to at least broach the subject whenever you land a side gig. Knowing how and when to have that conversation is pivotal, so keep these steps in mind before you sit down to discuss the matter.

  • Don’t be timid. Studies show only a small percentage of bosses have serious concerns about their employees pursuing a second job, provided it doesn’t negatively impact their performance. So embrace your decision and address it with your employer confidently.
  • Tell the truth. There’s no need to open up about dreams that haven’t yet come to fruition — but if you’re past the planning stage, it’s likely time to be appropriately transparent. Play up the positive aspects and don’t volunteer any information that isn’t relevant to the situation, but don’t make it seem as if you’re trying to hide something.
  • Don’t request permission. If you’re not violating any terms of your employment, you have no reason to come across as apologetic or ask your boss if it’s OK to earn money outside of normal work hours.
