One of the most memorable lines from the recent debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris came when Trump seemed to allege that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, had been eating the pets of local families.

Similar unverified claims were made by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance.

More than campaign rhetoric

In response to these statements, immigrant advocacy groups have begun pushing back against the Trump campaign. Specifically, the Haitian Bridge Alliance insists that amplifying these rumors has resulted in an uptick in hate crimes against Haitian immigrants.

The organization is now preparing to make its case in Ohio’s Clark County Municipal Court, alleging that both Trump and Vance are guilty of related crimes.

“There’s nothing special about Trump and Vance that entitles them to get away with what they’ve done and are doing,” said lead counsel Subodh Chandra. “They think they’re above the law. They’re not.”

Allegations and response

According to initial paperwork filed in the case, both GOP candidates are accused of:

  • Disrupting public service
  • Making false alarms
  • Telecommunications harassment
  • Aggravated menacing
  • Violating the prohibition against complicity

As Chandra argued, Trump and Vance “must be held accountable to the rule of law,” insisting that any other individual “who wreaked havoc the way they did would have been arrested by now.”

For their part, Trump and Vance have continued to make this issue a part of their presidential campaign, attracting support from immigration hard-liners but widening the chasm between his MAGA movement and the modern Democratic Party.

During a campaign stop in Pennsylvania this week, a defiant Trump proclaimed: “Do you think Springfield will ever be the same? The fact is — and I’ll say it now — you have to get them the hell out. You have to get them out. I’m sorry. Get them out.”
