The good news is that the inflation rate has been trending down for the past few months. Of course, that doesn’t mean prices are going down.

They’re just increasing at a slower pace after years of hikes have made many essentials (including groceries) all but unaffordable for millions of Americans.

But there are several things any savvy consumer can do to avoid paying any more than absolutely necessary.

  • Cutting coupons: It might seem old-fashioned, but couponing remains a great way to save on items you’re going to be buying anyway. And you don’t need to pull out the scissors and open the Sunday newspaper anymore. The mobile app Flipp will help you scour flyers for local grocers to find the best sales and coupons in your area.
  • Beware of bulk: In many cases, buying more of an item can result in some significant discounts. But this isn’t always the case. Instead of just buying the biggest container (which could lead to waste), check the tag on the shelf to find out which package offers the lowest price per unit.
  • Improvise ingredients: Many recipes can be adapted to include more cost-conscious items, such as replacing some of the expensive meat in a meal with beans or rice. This will save you money and might even help you create a new dinnertime favorite for your household.
  • Live by the list: You’ve probably heard that it’s not a good idea to go shopping on an empty stomach. That’s because it’s easy to buy things you don’t actually need. Instead, create a list of items you’ll actually be using in the near future and try not to deviate from it at all.

Groceries might still cost more than you want them to, but these tips can help you restore some sanity to your budget.
