If you’re not an avid gamer, you might not fully understand just how competitive the esports realm can be. But Blake Hunt knows it’s serious business.

Introducing the ‘Quad Gods’

The eight players who comprise the so-called Quad Gods are like many others at the peak of esports greatness, with one significant exception. They’re members of the world’s first all-quadriplegic team.

But Hunt and his teammates aren’t deterred by their physical limitations, instead choosing to embrace the freedom esports provides.

“All of us have the experience of being a prisoner in your own body,” Hunt explained. “Gaming is one place that you are allowed to escape, and then it becomes less about what you’re physically able to do and more about what you’re capable of.”

The Quad Gods have not only made a splash within the esports world, but their story is now being told in the form of a new documentary streaming on Max.

“I have to get involved”

Director Jess Jacklin said she first became aware of the Quad Gods during consultations with a neuroscientist regarding chronic pain she’d been experiencing. The doctor was experimenting with virtual reality to address issues impacting brain receptors, and Hunt was involved in some of those trials.

From there, Jacklin learned more about how the esports team formed and realized this was a story that should be shared with a wider audience.

“I have to get involved,” she thought.

The result is a film that strives to achieve more than a typical sports documentary.

“It wasn’t about proving that they were as good as other players or something like that,” Jacklin said. “It felt too superficial for what the actual experience was.”

By tying the resilience of the disabled community to the latest technological advancements, “Quad Gods” easily transcends the esports bubble.
