News reports last year were dominated by union strikes by workers in various industries across the U.S. But in England, there’s a new round of negotiations involving a profession that you might not associate with such disputes.

Junior doctors walk out

According to reports, a series of walkouts in recent months by British healthcare providers has resulted in “mediated talks” between junior doctors and government officials. Specifically, these doctors say they have not been receiving appropriate pay and solicited the representation of the British Medical Association to help make their case to the appropriate agencies.

“We have been in dispute for more than a year with the Government over declining junior doctor pay, exploring various avenues to try and resolve it,” said BMA co-chairs Dr. Robert Laurenson and Dr. Vivek Trivedi. “We have been looking at ways of restoring trust between parties and believe that an independent mediator can help break the logjam. We hope to reach a credible solution as soon as possible”

Everybody pays the price

While few people would blame junior doctors for making the case that they deserve more money, the ongoing dispute has caused a ripple effect across the British healthcare system.

  • An initial round of strikes led to the cancellation of nearly 1.5 million appointments.
  • In February, another walkout caused more than 91,000 appointments to be postponed.
  • As of this week, there have been a total of 10 strikes called by the junior doctors.

And it doesn’t look like things are going to change anytime soon. Although negotiations are ongoing, a recent vote found that a staggering 98% of those involved favored the continuation of the strikes.

In addition to doctors, healthcare workers including nurses, paramedics, and therapists have also taken part in the ongoing demonstrations.
