Of course there are. Every state prides itself on some notable custom this time of the year. Here are some of our favorites:
- Louisiana: Christmas lights take on a different meaning when massive log structures are set ablaze on the levees. These bonfires erupt every Christmas eve and the elaborate structures can be as tall as 30 feet or more.
- Missouri: You know Santa, but have you heard of the Fairy Princess? If you’re in the Show-Me State, you probably do. Women traditionally dress up in royal attire and interact with kids who leave with a gift from the princess’s treasure chest.
- Illinois: A German-themed Christmas market (or Christkindlmarkt) is currently open in Chicago with hundreds of vendors offering a host of foods, drinks, and unique gifts in the style of traditional markets that have been in operation for centuries across Germany.
- California: It might not be surprising that this state’s tradition involves surfing, but it’s still a sight to behold when a group of surfers dressed up like Saint Nick hang ten at Dana Point each year. Best of all, the proceeds from this event help kids with autism.
- North Carolina: If you need your Santa to be a little more adventurous, head across the country to see the Jolly Old Elf rappel down the 315-foot face of Chimney Rock in Asheville as the surrounding park is transformed into a winter wonderland.
- West Virginia: And finally, fans of old fashioned holiday lights will find plenty to love at the Oglebay Winter Festival of Lights, which spans 300 acres and includes more than one million bulbs to form one of the biggest displays in the nation.
