As teams from around the world gather in Australia and New Zealand, fans are rooting for their favorite teams during the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Many of those watching from the U.S. are hoping to see the squad clinch its third straight victory, but rivals are dedicated to preventing an American three-peat.
Analyzing the lineups
Let’s see how the eight group divisions are shaping up and who’s already been guaranteed a spot in the round of 16.
- Norway got off to a great start against New Zealand but ended its match with Switzerland with a tie. The Swiss team currently leads Group A.
- Nigeria leads Group B following a 3-2 win over Australia, but Canada is still in contention and could advance if it wins its next game and Nigeria loses.
- Two teams from Group C — Japan and Spain — have already clinched spots in the final 16 after back-to-back wins over Costa Rica and Zambia.
- England is in a prime position within Group D ahead of its upcoming game against China and will top the group if it scores just one point.
- America and the Netherlands are neck-and-neck in Group E after winning against Vietnam and Portugal, respectively, and tying in their game against each other.
- France could secure the top spot in Group F with a win or draw against Panama, but Jamaica and Brazil are still in contention to advance to the next round.
- Sweden is already destined to appear in the final 16 and will be the Group G winner if it finishes its game against Argentina with a draw or better.
- Columbia mounted an upset win over Germany and is on pace to dominate Group H, provided it scores a win or draw against Morocco.
