Happy Thursday, chirpers! When you think of some of your favorite movies, there’s probably a particular scene or quote that comes to mind. In many cases, this is the result of great writing … but sometimes it’s just a happy accident or clever ad lib by the actors. Some examples include “Titanic” director James Cameron injecting the line “I’m the king of the world” when Leo DiCaprio stood on the bow of the titular ship and actor Roy Scheider’s decision to reference a behind-the-scenes joke into his “Jaws” performance by exclaiming “We’re gonna need a bigger boat!” -Chris Agee Markets

That’s what Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said during a press conference yesterday, and investors responded enthusiastically. Even though rates are staying put for the time being, all three major indexes trended upward ahead of the closing bell in anticipation of some relief in the near future. World
The BreakdownA quick look around the world.Giphy🏊Swimmer’s dozen: Her collection might not be as extensive as fellow American swimmer Michael Phelps (yet), but Katie Ledecky earned her 12th Olympic medal — her seventh individual gold — and set a new record in the process. In the 1,500 freestyle event, she finished more than 10 seconds faster than the silver medal winner and is now tied with three other Americans for the most Olympic medals won by a female swimmer. Ledecky said she tries not to think about those comparisons but “it’s an honor just to be named among them.” 🎮 Bungie jump: The company behind video game hits like Halo, Destiny, and Marathon recently delivered a blow to its workforce, announcing about 17% of its 220 employees were being laid off. Sony purchased Bungie in 2022 and this is the second time it has announced layoffs since then. Two of the individuals who lost their jobs recently spoke publicly about the experience, asserting that they had no advanced notice that such an announcement was coming. Tzivi Sherman said he saw the news on social media before he learned his fate. 👨🚀 Eight weeks later: A pair of NASA astronauts who boarded the Starliner space capsule for what was supposed to be a weeklong trip to the International Space Station are still there after more than 56 days. A number of malfunctions upon docking with the ISS caused a delay in a return to Earth for Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore. There appears to be some encouraging developments underway, though, with NASA asserting on Thursday that ongoing tests of the capsule’s thrusters were positive and those involved were “happy with the results.” 🪖 Iranian attack: Unrest in the Middle East escalated even further this week after Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas terrorist organization, was assassinated in Iran. Hamas and Israel have been at war since the former’s attack on the latter almost 10 months ago, and Iran became more involved in the dispute following Haniyeh’s assassination. Although there had been no official claim of responsibility, Iran and others clearly suspected that Israeli forces were behind the deadly mission. Iran said it was that nation’s “duty” to seek revenge. Share this issue:technology
AI Is Coming For All Your Data … Including What’s Inside Your MouthEven brushing is becoming high-tech, but at what cost?GiphyWe’ve become accustomed to the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence, although it might be surprising how far-reaching the tech actually is. It’s even in a common product you might not think needs to be “smart.” Brush with destiny A toothbrush known as the Ara, created by a company called Kolibree, was the first to be released with AI capabilities a few years ago. Several more prominent oral care companies — including Colgate, Oral-B, and Philips — took notice and soon began developing their own entries into this fledgling market. So what is it that these smart toothbrushes claim to do? Those who tout their benefits say they can provide feedback that will improve how users care for their teeth. There’s even some research backing up this claim and a number of researchers indicate that AI monitoring can contribute to better dental health. However, there’s no clear consensus among providers regarding how much better AI toothbrushes are (if at all) than their traditional counterparts. And then there are the privacy concerns to consider. Tooth or consequences By their very nature, AI toothbrushes collect and analyze all sorts of personal information — including, but not limited to:
On the surface, this might seem like a great way to learn more about how you could improve your brushing habits, but it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that companies are also using all of this information to benefit their own advertising and product development. At this point, it remains to be seen whether AI toothbrushes are a fad or will be around for the long run. But Procter & Gamble exec Marc Pritchard believes this is one more step toward the so-called “internet of things” embedding tech into almost everything, which will “literally replace ads.” Share this story:Together With Gundry MD

Charting Sharpshooter Kim Ye-ji’s Ascent To Olympic SuperstardomShe's got the skills and swagger to warrant some serious social media clout.YouTube screenshot/Guardian SportEvery four years, the Summer Olympics tend to produce at least a handful of enormously talented athletes who become, at least for a while, household names around the world. This year, one such story involves a pistol shooter from South Korea. Hitting the target For starters, shooting isn’t exactly on the same level as gymnastics or swimming when it comes to popularity. So for 31-year-old Kim Ye-ji to make a splash beyond a core group of diehard spectators is in itself a testament to her skills and charisma. But what really set her apart from the rest of the crowd is her appearance. She shows up to compete with a unique pair of glasses and fires each bullseye shot as if it's the simplest task in the world. Her confident and calm demeanor has made her the subject of countless social media posts, and her comments thus far in the games only reinforce the narrative that her performance has fueled. Competitor and mentor None other than billionaire Elon Musk opined that it would be “cool” to see her star in her own action flick. But if her rivals are hoping that all the attention will throw her off the game, they should probably spend their time practicing instead. “I don’t feel any pressure at all,” she said prior to the Olympics and just after she broke a women’s world record in the 25-meter pistol event. By that time, she was already attracting attention, but said her confidence was “based on a foundation” and not subject to outside influences. And she’s taking the next generation of shooters under her wing, as evidenced by 19-year-old Oh Ye-jin’s gold medal win. “She is like my youngest sibling, and I always want to care for her and always be there for her,” she said. Public Backlash Over Venezuela’s Election Reaches A Fever PitchThe disputed results have sparked widespread protests across the nation.GiphyThe South American nation has been beset by economic upheaval and social unrest for years, and Sunday’s election sparked a whole new level of outrage. Voters make demands Incumbent President Nicolas Maduro isn’t the only one who claimed victory after Sunday’s election. His primary rival, Edmundo Gonzalez, also issued a statement insisting that he was the rightful winner. Amid destructive and violent protests in the streets, Maduro said he’d release the records he claims would prove he’s entitled to another term. But even that supposed show of transparency is falling flat among his critics, particularly since he’s calling on the nation’s Supreme Court (which is known to be quite sympathetic to his cause) to conduct an audit of the election results. Breaking down the numbers As of the most recent updates available, the official results show that Maduro has received just over half of the votes. But those aligned with Gonzalez say he is the true winner, citing exit polls and other sources that show he ended up with about two-thirds of the vote. Either way, as of this writing, vote counts at the precinct level have not yet been made public. An international incident The backlash across Venezuela can be seen everywhere, particularly as Maduro has called for the arrest of his rivals, whom he has described as “fascists.” But the controversy isn’t confined by the boundaries of one nation. Costa Rica became involved by offering Gonzalez and other opposition leaders asylum as their freedom and potentially their safety are at risk. And Peru went so far as to officially declare Gonzalez the winner of the election, resulting in the Maduro regime cut diplomatic ties between the nations. U.S. President Joe Biden is among the world leaders calling on Venezuela to release detailed election results. Share this story:Game
