🐤 Space beers, anyone?
NASA is taking yeast to space to determine the extent of health damage done in deep space to microorganisms.

It's Tea Tuesday, chirpers. Prepare for another amazing edition of Early Chirp. While we're enjoying the party atmosphere, let's touch on one thing that is fun at parties... Beer (if you're of age, obviously). I'll talk about yeast in particular in our feature story of the morning, but before then, let me tell you about the earliest mention of beer ever. The ancient Greek writer Xenophon for mentioned beer in the 5th century BCE (Armenians were getting turnt a long time ago) in his work entitled Anabasis. You can enjoy Early Chirp with a beer (if you're of legal age *tooth sparkle shimmer sound*) or you can stick with the tea. -Walter Yeates World
The BreakdownA quick look around the world.Shawn Thew-Pool/Getty Images👨⚕️ Fauci stepping down. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, is stepping down. He did not become a household name until the COVID-19 pandemic when he became the focus of partisan attacks. In December, Fauci will leave the federal government after more than 50 years. 🚘 Ford is laying off approximately 3,000 workers. While Ford did not partake in the big auto bailout just over a decade ago, it did dip into other government money to help the company. The cut represents nearly 6% of the workforce. The company claims the firings are to help Ford build for the future. Oddly enough, executives aren't taking a pay cut. 🐦 Elon drama continues. Here at Early Chirp, we've gone through the not-so-good PR year for Elon Musk and Tesla. The next chapter of 'Musky Matters' sees Elon Musk launch legal action to summon Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey to court as he attempts to back out of his $44 billion deal to purchase the social media company. 🐉 House of the Dragon biggest HBO premiere ever. Stories from George R.R. Martin's world look poised to be around for a long time. As I mentioned yesterday, House of the Dragon was coming, and nearly 10 million people watched the linear release and HBO Max on Sunday night alone...and that's just viewers in the United States. Dracarys indeed. Share this issue:space
Artemis I Mission Sending Yeast Into Deep SpaceNASA's Artemis I is sending yeast into space; why?The Simpsons via GiphyWhy is yeast going to space? The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA to its friends) has done it again. The uncrewed mission of Artemis I is using a shoebox-sized CubeSat called BioSentinel to carry yeast into space. However, they aren't planning to make bread or beer out of the yeast; the mission is searching to find how much radiation damage is done in deep space. The primary objective of BioSentinel is to monitor the vital signs of yeast to see how the microorganism fare in deep space. Interesting, right? What else is Artemis I doing?BioSentinel is just a small portion of the Artemis I mission; another nine payloads are going into space. A number of satellites are hitched in the Orion stage adapter on the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. They will carry out a number of investigations in deep space, but of what origin? Who knows? Depending on the returns of the study, scientists will be able to determine the extent of health damage done in deep space to microorganisms, but it doesn't seem like making beer in deep space is a good idea...yet. A Constitution Based On Science?Chile is contemplating a constitution steeped in science.President Gabriel Boric of Chile holding the proposal (Marcelo Hernandez/Getty Images)Chile is currently contemplating a new constitution that is steeped in science. The proposal was finalized on July 4th, leading to it becoming the nation best selling book (nice to see a populace carrying about small matters like a constitution). Flocks of Chilean citizens have purchased online and paperback copies of the new possible legal guidebook. What about science? The new constitution plans to 'boost science, expand environmental protection, and improve the nation's education system, a drastic difference from the current constitution enacted over 40 years ago under the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship. The new proposal says scientific achievements and technological solutions should be used to help improve the quality of life of Chileans while providing 'continuous improvement of public services and goods (doesn't sound too bad). It also says the state has a duty to prevent and adapt to the risks of the climate and biodiversity crises. One CatchDespite the public excitement the constitution isn't guaranteed to pass a September 4th vote due to opponents' concerns with some of the language, including a lack of intellectual property rights (could just add those) which could cause entrepreneurs to take their investments out of Chile. Apple Wants Workers In The Office, Workers Say NahThe workforce is moving to more remote, yet some companies don't want to accept that change.Crocs Europe/GiphyGood luck fighting this movementThe data is clear, the workforce is moving more remote in the United States, Upwork estimates that 22% (over 36.2 million workers in the United States) will work remotely by 2025. That's a staggering number when you consider the number of jobs that simply cannot be done at home (read more about remote work here, chirpers). The Battle At AppleApple is one of the companies attempting to keep workers in the office. Despite their calls, the company has been met with organized resistance when asking its employees to return to the office after loosening COVID restrictions. Apple employees are fighting to work from home more than three days a week, while Apple wants them to be in the office at least three days a week. While Apple is being more reasonable than Elon Musk (callback), this is an interesting battle for them to take on. Apple employees are asking for compelling reasons why they should be in the office three days a week. From someone who works remotely, I'll just say could I have two tea cups and three monitors while playing the Nightwish - Imaginarium album at an office? Share this story: |
