If you’re old enough to remember the ‘90s, you probably recall the attempt to make everything “extreme.” From the dawn of the X Games to 7-Eleven’s 52-ounce “X-Treme Gulp” soda, it was impossible to ignore the cultural revolution.

Well, now it’s back … at least in the form of a growing number of restaurants around the world.

Action-packed eating

There are several examples of what The New York Times determined was a leading trend for this year. Each one combines the joys of eating with the adrenaline rush of a breathtaking adventure.

It’s called “experiential eating,” and here are a few of the ways you can take part:

  • Travel through a transparent tunnel in the Maldives to eat at a restaurant 16 feet under the ocean.
  • Catch the views of a cavernous canyon at a Georgian eatery suspended from a bridge.
  • Cool off with a full-service meal prepared for you inside an igloo in Antarctica.
  • Dine more than 164 feet in the sky on a table held up by a crane in Greece.

What caused the trend?

As with any widely popular activity, the rise of experiential eating was likely influenced by a number of events. But most insiders think that COVID-19 had something to do with it.

After being forced to stay inside during the early months of the pandemic, many of us have embraced the freedom to get out and explore again. For some folks, that involves testing the limits of modern cuisine.

There was also a suspense film released last year — “The Menu” — that revolved around an exclusive restaurant established on a remote island. While diners might not want to end up like the characters in that flick, the idea of combining action and food is clearly too intriguing for many thrill-seekers to resist.
