Following the Republican Party’s lackluster performance in last week’s midterm elections, many pundits on both sides of the aisle began heralding former President Donald Trump’s waning influence on the party. After all, many of the candidates he endorsed went on to lose their races or eke out narrow victories in hard-fought campaigns.

Evidence of his downfall?

Despite the backlash, Trump made his intention to run again in 2024 official this week with an hour-long speech at his Mar-A-Lago golf resort in Florida. While some prominent Republicans have already fallen in line behind their party’s de facto leader, some factors seem to suggest that his fledgling campaign is already in trouble.

In addition to the GOP’s underperformance last week, consider this:

  • Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis scored an overwhelming re-election victory and is gaining support ahead of his possible 2024 White House bid.
  • Even some of the media outlets that have carried Trump’s water for more than six years are now starting to signal the end of his political reign.
  • Big-money donors that once padded the 45th president’s campaign coffers have publicly announced that they won’t be supporting him anymore.
  • His election announcement on Tuesday didn’t receive all that much media attention — even Fox News called off its live coverage after the speech began to drag on.

Not so fast…

The deck might be stacked against him at this point, but Trump has defied expectations time and again throughout his political career. Since he’s announced his campaign so far in advance, it could dissuade other Republicans from throwing their respective hats in the ring, which could help pave his way to yet another GOP nomination.

Only time will tell.
