The parents of children killed more than a decade ago in a school shooting in Connecticut took radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to court for broadcasting lies that portrayed the tragedy as a hoax.

On Thursday, a jury in Austin, Texas, determined that he owed more than $4 million to the family of 6-year-old victim, Jesse Lewis. The young boy was one of 26 victims – 19 other kids and six teachers – who died when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

The family hoped for a judgment of $150 million, but the $4.1 million ruling against Jones was just the tip of the iceberg.

In addition to additional civil claims from the families of other victims, he was in court the following day for a related case and received a judgment totaling more than $45 million in punitive damages.

Scarlett Lewis, the young victim’s mother, reacted to the decision with a word of advice to parents everywhere: “Care and concern is so important and we saw what happens when there is a dearth of that, and so I hope that we all just go home tonight and everybody that’s reading these articles and hearing this message and you chose love with your kids, because you can.”
